Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II, Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor, Green Lantern… If you notice any similarities among these titles — other than the fact that they’re some of the biggest films of 2011 — one of the biggest ones should be that they’re all male-led. True, Emma Watson‘s portrayal of Hermione Granger was at her most kick-butt status in the final installment to the mega-watt HP franchise, but Daniel Radcliffe‘s character is the one who is dubbed the hero of the series.
Fast forward to 2012: the year of the female. Representing the brave protagonist of The Hunger Games, Jennifer Lawrence totally defies the norm of a hero in film with her bow-and-arrow-wielding character, Katniss Everdeen. (No wonder she’s one of EW‘s Entertainers of the Year!) And she’s not the only lady to make headway in this area of the industry, which is why the New York Times created the ultimate round-up of power players. For its 2012 Hollywood Heroines list, 13 actresses — including Jennifer — appear in short films for the NYT series, “Wide-Awake.” Watch Jenn’s below!
Other 2012 Hollywood Heroines include Rebel Wilson, Anne Hathaway, Elle Fanning and Amy Adams. Who else would you consider to be one of this year’s greatest female movie characters?
