There’s a reason Channing Tatum was dubbed Sexiest Man Alive; The Vow, 21 Jump Street, Magic Mike — 2012 was his year. So you could almost hear a literal woe in the air after reading headlines that say he’s taking a break from acting come 2013. But fear not ladies (and probably gentlemen, too); no one said he’s quitting. Instead, he’s taking the time to focus on directing with MM screenwriter Reid Carolin, who also happens to be his production partner.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the heartthrob explains, "[Reid and I] have about three to four ideas that we love that are all in the hopper. By the end of next year, we're going to shut things down and write the first thing that we're going to direct. We're going to be like, alright, no more acting parts for a minute, let's take a few and really get caring about that section of our career.” He continues, "I love the steps that I’ve taken acting-wise. That has been a wild sort of exploration. But I don't want to just keep putting [directing] off for these fun and incredible opportunities.”
And “a break” doesn’t necessarily mean anything’s off limits. (You’re familiar with Ross & Rachel’s Friends dilemma, right?) After all, he still has at least four movies in the works for the following year, including the sequel to G.I. Joe where he reprises his role as Duke Hauser. Then, of course, there’s those potential second installments for 21 Jump Street and Magic Mike to follow.
